Our neighbor to the South has contributed much to our culture, including fiesta celebrations. Traditional fiestas were held on religious or civil holidays. In the US, modern fiestas have become a mixing of Mexican and American culture.
Americans have embraced the tradition of the fiesta, especially Cinco de Mayo. Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican national holiday celebrating the defeat of French troops at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1962. Interestingly, in Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated only regionally whereas the entire US celebrates Cinco de Mayo. Technically then, Americans celebrate this Mexican holiday with more gusto than do the Mexicans.
Mexican fiesta parties are a lot of fun to plan and especially fun with the huge supply of theme party items available. When decorating for a Cinco de Mayo fiesta, the sky is the limit.
Margaritas, quesadillas, tortilla chips and enchiladas are popular delights commonly served at fiestas. Salsa making contests get everyone involved in the swing of the party. With dips, chips, and messy foods you will want to have a supply of Mexican style serving bowls ($3-$7), mini bowls ($1), platters and trays ($1), fiesta plates ($2.46 for 8pk), fiesta napkins ($3.10 for 16pk), fiesta beverage cups ($2.72 for 8 pk) and margarita glasses. For $14 you can get a CD for your Cinco de Mayo fiesta.
In the US, Cinco de Mayo parties are pretty much a no-holds barred good time party. Set the mood with bright colored streamers hung or draped all around. Add blinking red and green lights to rev things up and to honor the colors of the Mexican national flag. Balloons in the shapes of cactus, sombreros, Mexican flags and chili peppers are a bright addition to the décor at prices ranging from $1-$5. Glittered cutouts with fiesta themes are a bright, shiny addition to the party. Chili pepper danglers, wind spinners, yard signs, paper lanterns, window stickers and inflatable decorations ($2-$5) add to the bright color and the overall theme.
Table ware is fantastic for fiesta parties. Mexican bowls, margarita glasses, serving trays, appetizer holders, condiment sets and individual picks are all available in bright colors and southwestern designs for $1-$10. Plates, napkins, beverage cups and table covers with coordinated designs and colors make the table setting complete for $2-$4 per pack.
For the culmination of your party, a piñata is the perfect accessory. Donkey, cactus and sombrero shaped piñatas splashed with color are easy to fill with treats. Even if you choose to not bash the piñata, a piñata hanging from the ceiling is an important ingredient of any fiesta. Available at a very reasonable price of $13 your piñata will swing and sway the night away. Fiesta light sets at $6 a string highlight the darkness with little red sombreros and green cactus. Your party is sure to be a success with fun, Mexican design decorations.
Fiestas are colorful, grand celebrations. For your fiesta, go all out. Your superbly decorated fiesta will be something your guests will look forward to year after year.
Put up the decorations, grab your sombrero and let the fiesta begin!
