Your relationship with your loved one is unique, so when you make the decision to marry, why not put your heart into designing your own unique engagement ring rather than buying a ring off the shelf?
Since the ring will be worn by your partner, you would be well advised to first and foremost consider what kind of ring she would like. Would she prefer platinum, yellow or white gold? Would she like her ring to be a round, emerald or some other fancy shape? Does she want a white diamond, a colored diamond, a gem or no stone at all? Does she want a solitaire or side stones? Does she work with her hands so that a recessed setting might be preferable? What size might she wear?
Wow, by now you might be reconsidering the whole ring idea. Don’t panic; if possible, snoop in her jewelry box and try to ascertain what type metal she prefers and if she is more into simple or fancy jewelry. If you can discreetly talk with her mother, sister or close friend, find out what they think her preferences might be. She may have told a person close to her what she would like for an engagement ring; she may even have been hinting to you. Pay close attention to the jewelry she wears and see if there is any hint of her current taste. If all else fails, ask her point blank what she would like if she had her choice. Simply asking is sometimes the best policy, as well as the easiest.
Once you have a good idea of her taste, size and preferences, look for a talented, trustworthy jeweler with whom to collaborate in making your unique engagement ring. You will want to work with a jeweler that has done custom work in the past; for something as important as your engagement ring you will not want to be someone’s learning curve. Search until you find a jeweler you are comfortable working with and that you feel listens to what you want. Be willing to listen to what your jeweler suggests as well; they understand the mechanics of ring making. Your design may have inherent flaws so be willing to bend to preserve the wear-ability and durability of the ring. In other words, you may have designed a beautiful ring that is not “mechanically sound” and will not last with everyday wear.
You will need to decide what type of metal, shape of the gem, whether to go with an intricate or plain finish on the ring and whether to set side stones. You will have to make all the decisions about the entire ring when you choose to design the engagement ring. A great way to get ideas is to browse websites and look at rings of all sorts. Look at vintage rings, custom designed and ready made rings for ideas. Gather details from all rings and then envision how you would like the engagement ring to look when finished. Communicate your final vision to your jeweler and they will help you make it a reality.
Designing a unique engagement ring for your very special relationship need not be overwhelming. Take your time and research your loved ones preferences, look at numerous websites for ideas you think she might like incorporated into the ring and then go to your jeweler with your ideas. Work closely with them and your dream engagement ring will be a reality in time to say, “Will you marry me?”
