From Intern to Company President

The art of shoe repair or cobbling brings to mind a dedicated craftsman working in his shop, using techniques handed down from his father. Although modern materials and methods are often used today, cobblers, whether they have large operations or little one man shops, still take pride in the quality of the work they do. More than 15 years ago, that’s what impressed young intern Eric Neuner.

Eric was working for a shoe repair business in California and had been there for a few months when he finally made his way out to the factory to see the operation. To this day, he says, the experience filled his senses with sights, sounds and smells of the cobbler’s shop. Little hammers tapping on hardened leather heels, the busy aroma of fresh cut leather and expertly applied shoe polish, and the seemingly endless activity of a busy shoe repair factory.

Many people can recall a single moment in their life when they suddenly knew their direction in life. Some call it the “a-ha moment.” Eric says that standing there in the factory and seeing and sensing the pride of the craftsmen and the skills they displayed was that moment for him. Fifteen years later, that young intern has become the president of NuShoe, a large shoe renewal and repair company headquartered in San Diego, California.

Eric has helped differentiate his company from others in the business, starting with the company’s stated goal “to provide the highest quality craftsmanship and best customer service possible every day, with every customer, and with every pair of shoes.” Eric has pioneered other innovations in the shoe repair business as well. Think about the shoe repair business for a moment. If you had a favorite, expensive pair of shoes or workboots that you wanted to have repaired, where would you go? The local shoe store? Not likely.

Eric and NuShoe look toward modern technologies and methods of reaching customers. They originally had a network of shoe repair customer service centers in area malls reaching out to customers in various communities. They soon saw a better way. The internet reaches millions more customers than any number of retail outlets could ever hope to reach. NuShoe decided to use the internet to educate customers and remind them that old world craftsmanship and pride in a a job well done is alive and well right here in the USA. The evidence is in the care that NuShoe shows in every repair and renewal they do.

They also make the entire process easy for the customer. By filling out a simple form on the NuShoe website, customers will receive a prepaid mailing bag in which to send their shoes to the NuShoe factory. Within a short 21 days, those same shoes will arrive back in the customer’s mailbox, as good as new, or better. NuShoe uses original factory quality materials and methods to rebuild the shoe. The replace the soles and even the upper portion of the shoe until it is literally new again.

Eric Neuner and NuShoe set themselves apart with a welcome blend of differentiated customer service and old fashioned pride in a job well done.

What Makes a Classic?

What Makes a Classic?

With almost any class of items, those of true quality withstand the test of time and outlast their cheaper counterparts. Their style and workmanship make them standouts, and they continue to be sought year after year.

In the automotive world, one thinks of the ’57 Chevy or the ’67 Mustang as cars whose reputations have grown over the years turning them into desired collectors’ items. Nearly every serious car collector has had one of them at one time or another. Both were uniquely styled and well-made. The Mustang was also known for its powerful engine, living up to the reputation of the wild and powerful beast from which it gets its name.

In fashion, most popular trends come and go in a single season, losing their value before they show any signs of wear. Yet a classic business suit can be worn for many years and look as good and as fashionable as it did when it was first purchased. While some people don’t mind being a slave to fashion and running out several times a year to update their clothes and even their accessories, others prefer a more sensible approach, avoiding fashion trends and fads in favor of classic designs. These people with the longer term view tend to be customers of Maxwell Scott Bags.

Maxwell Scott also takes the long term perspective into account in the design and workmanship of their handbags and business cases. First, Maxwell Scott uses traditionally hand crafted Italian leather which is certified Vera Pelle Italiana Conciata al Vegetale by the Italian Consortium of leather Tanners. This designation assures Maxwell Scott customers that the leather used in their handbag is made with a 200 year old vegetable tanning process that provides increased longevity and richer colorization and character than modern chemical tanning processes.

The quality of Maxwell Scott Bags does not end with the selection of materials. Every stitch, every buckle, every last bit of every Maxwell Scott bag is made with full attention to quality. That effort is reflected in Maxwell Scott’s lifetime guarantee against any defect in the material or workmanship of any of their products. This guarantee covers stitching, zippers, buckles, straps, and virtually any part of the bag. The only thing it doesn’t cover is ordinary wear and tear that might cause things like scuffing or tearing of the leather.

Finally, Maxwell Scott combines all of the quality materials and workmanship into bag designed with classic and timeless elegance. Maxwell Scott bags are intended to last for years so they don’t rush out to adopt the latest fad. Instead, they rely on the enduring beauty that comes with the strong character of their designs. They do offer a wide variety of styles to meet the various preferences of their customers, but all of them are meant to last.
