If you are one of the people fortunate enough to have a vacation home, you are probably one of the people unfortunate enough to know how much work it takes to maintain it! In this article you’ll find some tips to hopefully make it easier on you to maintain the home, as well as make it more enjoyable. Having someone to care for it in your absence, insuring it properly and building a home that takes minimal upkeep are all keys to having a stress free vacation home.

If your vacation home is somewhere you only travel several times a year, it would be worth it for you to hire someone to take care of it in your absence. This needs to be someone you have already built a business relationship with or someone through word of mouth that you have heard of and trust. Most often, you can hire realty companies in the area to take care of your vacation home. It is best to have someone scheduled to go in and do upkeep cleanings, preferably right before you arrive and right after you leave. You can even have someone hired to stock the pantry and fridge for you before you get to the house. Do some shopping around and find out what type of service other vacationers in the area use to make the best decision possible.

Your vacation home is probably in high traffic areas. It may even be on the beach, or near the beach. Either way, you should have proper insurance coverage on the home. You need to have coverage if you are going to have anyone else on the property taking care of it while you are away. This will help to protect you if anyone gets hurt while they are there working. Most insurance companies that provide homeowner’s insurance have websites, so you are free to comparison shop online at your leisure. You want to make sure that your policy will cover the house as well as everything you have in the house. Don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions and take your time in deciding which provider to go with.

Finally, if it is possible, you should choose to build a vacation home that has minimal upkeep. By building brick or siding homes, you are immediately cutting down on the maintenance of the home. Another thing you can do to make the maintenance load easier is to landscape the yard, so that it requires the minimal amount of attention and you get the maximum visual output. Plant flowers everywhere! This will cut down on the amount of grass that needs to be mowed and trimmed. You can install sprinklers that are on a timer for the flowers, and voila! Your yard work is done! You can hire someone to go by on a bi-weekly basis and cut the grass, and that’s about all you should have to do.

Having a vacation home is truly a great experience. However, by making sure your home is low maintenance, insuring it properly and hiring people to care for it in your absence, it can make it that much more enjoyable. This will cut down on your work load when visiting. After all, aren’t you supposed to be on vacation?
